Description Fabian Köster 2005-05-17 12:57:38 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

I am using Kubuntu 5.04 with KDE 3.4

The Setup-page for the mouse in KControl seems a bit turned out badly:
The option for the Pointer Acceleration has no slider and the field on the right side spreads over the whole space.
Moreover the 'German-translated' layout broadens the entire form over screen-size.

Screenshots follow...

I just saw that KDE 3.3 has no slider there as well. But why?

I mean it looks somehow confusing, this large white field and a slider would fit much better.

KDE 4 has changed the UI of this dialog, so the problem has been fixed.
Comment 5 Maciej Pilichowski 2009-01-06 22:17:50 UTC
The wish was to add slider, still there is no slider, so the issue is fixed? Finex, please reopen this report is still valid, only now (feature) it is valid for all mouse controls not only one.

The only thing that changed is now it is a wish, not a bug.
Comment 6 FiNeX 2009-01-06 23:29:02 UTC
Ok, I've reopened it. Anyway it should, at least, be specified why sliders could be better than spin boxes.
Comment 7 Maciej Pilichowski 2009-01-07 08:37:00 UTC
Sliders are _not_ better than editboxes (and vice versa). They are complementary widgets. So it should be like in old KControl -- both of them.

Slider is useful for fast setting values, spinbox for fine tuning or for direct entering values for people with some kind of disability.

Marking as junior job.
Code is in kde-workspace/kcontrol/input

The measures such as acceleration in x and Pointer threshold in Pixels are not very intuitive unless the manual is consulted. It will be great if usability testing is done to arrive at terminology that is easily understood by many.

A slider that dynamically applies settings in a test area will be helpful. Some sample activity in dragging, selecting, clciking, double-clicking would be great add-on. There should be on-screen guidance on values which are currently available in help as tips.

"Tip - In general, the higher you set the Pointer acceleration value, the higher you will want to set the Pointer threshold value. For example, a Pointer threshold of 4 pixels may be appropriate for a Pointer Acceleration of 2x, but 10 pixels might be better for 3x."

Quoting from Thomas Pfeiffer from Google+ discussion on the topic

A slider only would be fully sufficient in this case. Unless you have some very special abilities, you won't even notice the difference between 500 and 510msec.
Tooltips would do wonders for technical things like Pointer Threshold. The term "Pointer Sensitivity" in Ubuntu sounds way less technical, but I don't understand what even that term means.
A test area for double-click would be great.
In fact, this is a KCM that would greatly benefit from instant apply, because you would see the effect immediately after each change, without having to click "Apply" each time. However, since it would not make sense to use instant apply just in this KCM but nowhere else, it would be great to have a general "test area" which always uses the currently set values (even if they are not applied yet). I don't know if that's even feasible, though.

Looks like touchpad settings has received some UI changes. Should be easier to port it to mouse settings?

Closing this as I already see a slider in mouse settings
