Description Stefan 2005-05-10 21:43:50 UTC
Version: 1.2.3 (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from:    Unlisted Binary Package
OS:                Linux

The Collection Browser can sort the files by artist, album and now also genre, but there is no possibility to sort by the directory tree. I think it is a very useful option because many mp3-files have uncomplete or even missing id3-tags - but if you have a well sorted directory tree the id3s are not a problem. It would be much easier to search my database then.

why not use the file browser?
Comment 3 Jonas Ådahl 2005-08-12 14:07:04 UTC
If you by file browser mean konqueror, no. I don't run amaroK inside KDE so i normaly don't have it running. The Celloction Browser is a neat idea, but sorting by directories is a kind of easy thing to add I can guess (haven't looked at the code, just guessing).

It would take alot of unnecessary power from my computer to have konqueror running when there is no need for it.

No, he means amaroK's File Browser. The bottom last sidebar tab on the left
side.

I would like to voice my support for this feature request firmly and add some thoughts that can elucidate how file system organization can be *combined* with database information to have a way cleaner organization.
Right now the Collection Browser can use several tiers of tags to organize music: Genre, Artist, Album and so on. However, on either dirty collections, i.e. with lots of tags missing (see above), this is messy. The top and second levels will be very long. People surely have organized all that _somehow_ in in a directory structure that can be tapped to help exploring the collection .

.../ (collection root)
/Stuff from Peter (who dosn't know how to tag)/
/early russian electronics/
/obscure/
/jazz/
/party two weeks ago/
/classical/bach/cantatas (45 albums)
/classical/bach/organ (15 albums)

If it's possible to parse these directory levels from the database it would be nice if we could do something like this in the Collection Browser

1st Level :: Directory Lvl 1
2nd Level :: Directory Lvl 2
3rd Level :: Artist
4th Level :: Album

Foobar2000, I'll attach an image, can do directory view in it's database component "album list". A step forward would be to have a combination of directories and tags. That way the top level can be filtered by gross categories so that well tagged and poorly tagged files can be separated.

The point of the collection browser is to abstract away from the directory structure.

This would provide no benefit over using the filebrowser directly
