Description Jason Powers 2005-04-26 02:41:43 UTC
Version: 0.10 (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package
OS: Linux

Using AIM, I'm able to send messages, but not receive them from some people who are aliased at the server. I haven't tracked down what defines whether or not I can receive their messages. Possibly a space in the alias, but I'm hoping to do a little more research later. Referenced here, but I've had that experience previous to installing Kubuntu Hoary 5.04.

I have found a workaround for this issue. It seems to have to do with something specific within the server alias, as if I delete and recreate the contact from within kopete, it fixes the issue with that particular contact.

Did the contact alias have spaces in their name before?

Yes, the contact alias had spaces in it before I ever started using kopete. The solution for me was to eliminate the server alias and rename using meta contacts instead.

ok, thanks for the info, that definately gives me something to look for. :)

I have this problem too. Here is some additional info:

So there is a user who has spaces in her screen name whose messages I cannot see. I have other users with spaces in my contact list and I believe that I also do not get their messages too.

Now if I remove this user from my contact list and tell her to send me a message, again nothing happens. However if I have show offline users enabled, her screen name, with spaces, appears in "Not in your contact list" at the time she sends that message and is marked as offline, even though she is online. So this tells me that kopete is getting something, but its just not showing me the message.

Now lets say I use the workaround described above. I remove that users again, and then I add it before I get a message. The first thing I notice is that, even though I typed her screen name with spaces, the name that appears when I mouse over her contact does not have any spaces. It is also incorrectly marked as offline, unless I view the user info. Though I get her messages, I would never know if she is online unless I checked the user info, so the workaround is not a solution for me.

anybody test this with a newer version of Kopete (either 0.10.2 or 0.10.3) and report back whether this is still a problem? Several fixes have been put in place to handle this.

i couldn't reproduce this with the KDE 3.5 beta 1 release of Kopete and since there have been code changes to deal with issues caused by spaces in screennames and aliases, i think it's fixed.
