Description missive 2005-04-18 19:54:41 UTC
Version: 2.4 (using KDE 3.4.0, Gentoo)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.5-r1, ssp-3.3.2-3, pie-8.7.7.1)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.11-gentoo-r5

I know I can split the screen and have two views of a file that way, but I think it would also be nice to be able to have two views of the same file in the file list (or maybe two tabs with different views of the same doc if the tab extension is activated).

Might be confusing -- so there could be one of those dialogs with the "don't show me this again" checkbox that says "you are about to open another copy of this file which is already open.

Like the split view... the views should always stay in sync.

Split view is good for some things, but often I want to work on completely unrelated things in different areas of the same file, and the split view does not really make sense there.

I fear I don't get your problem. Why can you not just use bookmarks for fast navigation?
Comment 2 missive 2005-05-01 22:50:42 UTC
That would be perfect: the ability to open two tabs, or have two entries in the file list open to two different bookmarks.

I do use bookmarks. The biggest problem I have with those is that they get lost all the time.

Also, if I am working on 2 parts of a file, having to switch back and forth using the bookmarks is inconvenient (especially if I have a list of 20 bookmarks in a file to pick from to switch back and forth).

Kate does not have 'tabs'.

How ever, it is possible to have two or more views of one file, simply split
the view. You can switch between views using [shift +] F8

Kate restores bookmarks, if the file haven't changed between sessions.

Again, split the view. I do that all the time if I want to view a structure in
the top of the file while implementing a method using it for example.

"Kate Tab Bar Extension" is very nice.

Yes, but I am not a big fan of split window. At least
not the way it works right now.

How about if the tab bar extension could show a tab
for the split window -- instead of having to slide the
slider or press a different key-combo to switch the view
just because this particular view I want is a view of a
file that is already open.

No, the extension is only a plugin which represents the opened documents. I
do not have plans to extend it in such a way. In other words: The tabbar
plugin isn't the right way to go ;)

We have now in the KF5 version of Kate:

- tabs
- split views
- multiple main windows

I really think an additional layer of complexity won't help (and internally much stuff relies on only one view per document in the same tab/splitter, sorry.
