Description Christian Hoelbling 2005-04-13 16:54:13 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: 3.4.3-20050110 Gentoo Linux 3.4.3.20050110-r2, ssp-3.4.3.20050110-0, pie-8.7.7
OS: Linux

on my inspiton 5150, kded pops up the volume window, the volume creeps towards 0% and the volume window stays open and permanently on top until i disable kmilo.

this happens if i8k-support is compiled into the kernel, but without the i8k-buttons demon running. seems it constantly gets a volume down event???

Same problem on my Inspiron 8500,
using KDE 3.4.* compiled with gcc version 3.3.5-20050130 (Gentoo 3.3.5.20050130-r1, ssp-3.3.5.20050130-1, pie-8.7.7.1)
If I load the i8k kernel module at startup, kded pops up the volume window, the volume creeps towards 0% and I can't raise the volume, then window stays open and permanently on top of everything.
If I load the i8k kernel module after kde startup everything seems OK

This module is dependant on the i8kutils package and kernel module of Massimo Dal Zotto (http://www.debian.org/~dz/i8k/). As his README (and my own incidently) clearly state:

The driver seems *NOT WORKING* on the following models:

    Inspiron 2500 (BIOS A10)
    Inspiron 3200
    Inspiron 3500
    Inspiron 5000e (BIOS A06)
    Inspiron 5150 (BIOS A23)
    Inspiron 7000
    Inspiron 7500
    Latitude CPx H450GT
    Latitude LS H500ST

As such, the i8k kernel module shouldn't be loaded on your systems and, if the kernel module isn't loaded, the Dell KMilo module won't load also.

same problem on a Dell 8600 (and it's NOT listed in #2). i8k kernel module loaded at startup. with kmilo enabled, a constant volume down event is received.
Without kmilo enabled, I can assign the volume control buttons to Kmix and everything seems to work ok. So it looks like its a problem with kmilo and not with i8kutils, please reopen this bug

also my Inspiron 8500 seems NOT blacklisted in #2

Hi,

I also have an 8600 and experience the same problem with FC4 and KDE 3.4.1. I would also tend to support the idea that the problem is with kmilo and not the i8k utils.

Prior to KDE 3.4.x I was using kmilo fine together with the i8k plugin for gkrellm to control my fans. With KDE 3.4.x kmilo broke *but* the gkrellm plugin has continued to work fine. Also, the i8k* command line options still appear OK. So, from my end it does look like its kmilo thats broken and not i8kutils, seeing as gkrellm is still fine ?

1. check the output of i8kctl
2. check the last field - its supposed to denote the status of the Fn key
3. if its always "2", then i8k *does not* return the work with the function key of your machine (same as mine)

The previous versions of KMilo didnt have a dell-specific monitor and hence defaulted to the generic one. If your i8k doesnt report the Fn-status properly then your best bet is to disable (I think removing the $PREFIX/lib/kde3/kmilo_delli8k.* should work) the i8k monitor for kmilo. The generic kmilo still works good as long as your function keys emit the proper X keycode.

I've done these tests. I own an inspiron 510m and altought I know it is not "officially" listed to be supported, it almost works.

The only problem for me is that once I insert the CD in the aux bay I get the kmilo in the explained behaviour.

I've done the tests in #6 and find that before inserting the CD the Fn status digit is always 0, no matter how and when the Fn key is pressed. Once I insert the CD the digit is always 2, so I guess there could be a problem in the i8k module.

Still I wonder what is the best solution to solve this problem.

You could also see the debian bug report http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=345623 which also explains a little more about this.

I have dell latitude d800 and the same problem. (kde 3.5.5, debian testing)
when i press volume UP, volume go slowly UP, after release volume UP key, volume itself fades slowly down.
bud when volume fade down and I press volume DOWN key, volume fade down fast.
it comes to this, that volume keys working, bud only small bug is anywhere (always slowly decrement volume).
thanks and sorry for my english
