Description Paul Hoepfner-Homme 2005-03-19 07:51:00 UTC
Version: 1.8 (using KDE 3.4.0, Gentoo)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.2 20040108 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.2-r6, propolice-3.3-7)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.11-gentoo-r3-ck2

I think it would be nice if marking a message as "To Do" would automatically add it to the to-do list of Kontact. I'd love to be able to see which e-mails I still have to deal with on the Summary page of Kontact without having to mark them as "New" or "Unread", which is how I've been working around the problem for now. It would make much more sense if I could mark the messages as "To Do", since I _have_ read them - I've just put them on the back-burner for now. It would be a great way to make KMail's new "To Do" marking ability even more meaningful.

Me too. :) I'll see what I can do.

Personally, I would take this one step further and some method of sorting on or searching out emails marked as "To-Do" in the entire mail folder hierarchy.

I am a user who prefers *not* to use Kontact and I run KMail directly. As the OP has pointed out, currently the only way to mark these messages in a *useful* way is to mark them unread. I employ a very extensive folder list for whitelist filtering and I quickly lose track of "To-Do" messages unless I remember to mark them unread.

I suggest:

(1) adding, as an option, a column in the folder tree to indicate the presence of outstanding /special/ items (such as "To-Do", Important, etc.)

(2) When selecting the root folder ("Local Folders"), instead of presenting an ad page for KMail (this info belongs in the "About" dialog, IMO), all mails should be displayed in a global pool (see Akregator behaviour). Then, providing a "Status" quickfilter/dropdown as is available in a regular mail folder would permit a quick way to isolate such /specially marked/ email messages.

I copy here a good proposal of Stefan Haun in a mark as duplicated wish:

------- Additional Comment #1 From Stefan Haun 2006-08-24 21:33 -------
The biggest problem I see is the tight coupling between kmail and korganizer this feature would lead to. An appointment cannot be created without having korganizer installed - but an advantage of the kontact suite are the independent components.

 What about the following:
In KMail, there is an option "Create Task" in every e-mail which would create a task in KOrganizer via DCOP, or DBus for KDE4. With a kontact kio slave, it would even be possible to attach the mail to the task.

With this solution, there is no dependency between the two tools, apart from the DCOP call. The mail may be moved or deleted without affecting the task.

Synchonization between the task and the e-mail would require some linkage. This cold be done via the attachment in the task (kio slave...) and a field in the mail header (X-KTask-ID?). Something alike...

What ever the solution looks like, it should not make both the tools dependend from each other.

Bug 125204 has a nice suggestion to use a calendar resource for putting these tasks in. This prevents tight coupling between KMail and KOrganizer, and is consistent behaviour wrt. KAlarm and KArm.

When marking email as "to-do" it could be very good idea to add to-do list on kontact. And to-do name would be email subject...

This is exactly the functionality I would like to see.

I get plenty of mails every day, and the really important ones, I mark as todo. Typing todo in the search bar doesn't produce any results (whereas typing today in the search bar does show today's messages).

If the messages marked as todo show up automatically in kontact, it would make life for me easier.

Thanks for all of KDE!

You can search for a given status in the search bar. Searching for messages
marked as To-do should work this way.

Indeed it does, but that is much less effective if your mail is sorted into multiple folders. I tried creating a persistent search folder, which worked, but was too heavy on the system resources.

I also ran into an issue dragging email to the todo icon in kontact. After a while the attachment on the todo doesn't work any more, and it's difficult to find the message again. I've filed a bug on that as well, hoping to see it fixed soon.

It makes sense, when a message is marked todo, to show up in the todo list. Though I don't think it's necessary to change the subject line...

This feature already exists in KDE 3.5.8, isn't it?
Comment 18 Nick W 2008-02-06 23:57:43 UTC
If it is in 3.5.8, it's either not working or I don't know how to turn the feature on.
Comment 19 Iñaki Baz Castillo 2008-02-07 00:00:39 UTC
Press with right buttom overany mail and click the last entry "Create task...".
Comment 20 Fri13 2008-02-07 14:47:53 UTC
I dont get "Create task" from context meny, only a "save attachments" and "move to trash"

KDE 3.5.8 and Kmail 1.9.7
Comment 21 Allen Winter 2008-02-07 15:09:26 UTC
some distros are shipping a slightly different version of kdepim with KDE 3.5.8 so it is possible that the Create Tasks menu isn't there for some people.

We are fixing that with the 3.5.9 release which will be released in a couple weeks.

Comment 22 Nick W 2009-09-08 17:23:40 UTC
This feature appears to have regressed a bit. I'm using kmail 1.12.1, and while the create todo button works, it no longer adds the mail as an attachment to the todo.

So I have the from, to, and subject lines, which enables me to dig and usually find the mail, but it is far from convenient.
Comment 23 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2011-11-27 13:27:31 UTC
Works now with "Create To-Do" button in KMail2. Closing.
