Version: 1.7.1 (using KDE KDE 3.3.92) Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package OS: Linux It would be nice if the embedded dvi/ps/pdf viewer could open previews in tabs alongside your sourcefiles. This kind of behaviour is implemented in KDevelop, where you can have tabs showing html-help and tabs showing sourcefiles open at the same time. IMO, the disadvantage of current behaviour is that it is disorienting. The entire editor goes into preview mode, which completely changes the UI. In addition, switching back and forth between Viewer and Editor modes is a bit slow, even on modern machines. Switching between tabs should be much faster and it has the advantage that the UI looks more stable to the user. A disadvantage of the proposed behaviour is that it leaves no place for the viewer toolbar in the UI. The sidebar should probably also be disabled. But if these are needed, one could simply open the viewer in a separate window. I cannot estimate how hard it is to implement this behaviour, but since it works for the khtml part in KDevelop, something similar should be feasible for the kdvi/kghostview/kpdf parts.
I hate toggling so I would really like to have the editor and the preview visible simultaneously (ie. not tabs). I have a big screen - in full screen mode I think it would be possible to see both at the same time (especially if one dropped the directory tree sidebar).
Kile 3 will have an embedded Okular viewer.
