We can not change this behaviour at this moment. Maybe KDE4 will make this possible, sorry for that. This could (should) also solve another problem: if mail-conversations are lengthy, the tree structure takes the place of the subject field, i.e. makes it unreadable. The problem is still there in KDE 4.3.2 Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented. Thank you for your understanding.
