Description Dik Takken 2004-03-23 23:59:48 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
OS: Linux

Kontact should be able to associate sent and received e-mails, notes and chat logs with a person. When I lookup the information about a contact, Kontact should not only show his/her name/address/e-mail info, but also:

* List emails that I have sent to this contact
* List emails that I have received from this contact
* Chat history of recent chat sessions with this contact
* Notes that concern this contact

This last option requires that users can create notes that belong to a certain contact, which is not yet possible AFAIK.

Concerning showing of e-mails: It would be nice to have a switch that will interleave the list of sent and received emails in chronological order.

The list of emails to/from the contact could just be links to a kmail search view. That would be simple but solve the major wish here...
Comment 2 Dik Takken 2004-10-20 12:09:08 UTC
That would certainly be a nice quick solution for now, but it is a solution that works only for KMail.

I think all Kontact components should export a funtion that generates a summary of information that has to do with a particular contact. Calling that function for the Kmail component could yield a small list of the most recent messages sent/received, the address book yields a summary of address/phone data for that contact and the Kopete component could show the last few messages and the on-line status. The information summaries of all components should be displayed when the user selects a contact from the list.

kontact should associate files with contacts too.
The kde save-file-dialog should have a menu to do that.

Concerning Comment #4:

I don't know how Kolab/MS Exchange/Whatever works, but if it is possible to store documents in a certain contact's profile on the server, this might indeed be useful. We could implement a kio slave that can handle reading/writing documents to a contact profile on the server. With this kio slave, we won't need a special entry in every application's File menu, if that's what you mean. You could just click on the Kolab server icon in the navigation panel of any KFileDialog and do your thing.

I think its not useful to use the groupware server for storing the files that belongs to contacts. But it could be one option.

You should select one or more directories, imap-folders or kio slaves (webdav, ftp, fish) where you want to save such files, emails(copies), notes(copies), pdfs (as a copy of a printjob/faxjob), chatlogs.....

This locations could be published to the groupware server.

Regarding Comment#2, "...but it is a solution that works only for KMail..."

It is natural that Kontact would implement features that integrate with Kmail. That's what it is designed for. That said, I do currently use Thunderbird and will have to continue doing so until bug #33670 is implemented. But Kmail users should enjoy the integrated features.
