Description Sean Lynch 2003-10-20 02:41:19 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

I have been having troubles recently with users iming me and I can't respond back to them (says they are offline). Right now I have only noticed this on the AIM protocol (oscar), although that is all I primarily use. Its only on a few users though. As I can collect more informatoin to help troubleshoot this, I will post it. I've disabled most all of my plugins to see if it might be related to one of them.

It's the famous "contact not on serverside-contactlist"-problem. Try removing the temporary user and add him manually using the add contact wizard.

HACK to solve it - and more
i also had this problem, also these users where not visible online to me when using their icq-accounts. this seems only to occur with people having aol as their internet provider.
well... the Hack:
if i log in with on my accounts with gaim, then close gaim and log in
with kopete all works ok!

so there must be something nessecery gaim does on login and kopete does not...

On the same subject:
In MSN, you can continue to chat to poeple if the chat socket stay open, even if you are disconnected/hidden/the user blocked you.
In that case, since the Send button is grayed, you can't send, but you can receive.

Sean: these people that im'd you, were they on your contact list, or no?
Comment 7 Sean Lynch 2004-04-04 07:53:38 UTC
I believe both, but I'm for sure some have been on my list (although ones which I don't talk to much) and I couldn't respond to them.

found the problem. Will work on fix.

Awesome, I look forward to it. If I can help in any way, let me know.

CVS commit by mattr:

Merge back the goodbye_aimbuddy branch, which gets rid of the leftover API
from Kit and fixes several contact list handling bugs, the most annoying
being that you couldn't IM people who weren't on your contact list.

Wait, so this is supposed to be fixed? I have KDE 3.2.3 (Kopete 0.8.3) compiled from source (gentoo) and I still have this problem.

I had seen the the GAIM page that the server side contact list might be corrupted, and to use an official client to connect to fix the buddy list, and then connect with Kopete. I tried it with aimexpress (their browser version of aim) and the users who were online showed as online. When I went back into Kopete and logged in all AIM users were being shown as offline again.

Can I do something to fix it on my side, or should I do something with the official client again to fix it?

Use one of the 3.3 betas to get the fix
