Bug 63397

Arg, I'm frustrated!  Ok, I was playing around with the menu editor, and moved
the SUSE menu into the openoffice menu right next to it, making the SUSE menu a
submenu of the openoffice menu, just to see what would happen.  There was no
change.  Then I reopened the menu editor and moved the suse menu back out again,
and closed the menu editor, now the suse menu is gone!  Reopening the menu
editor reveals the suse menu is neither in the openoffice submenu, nor at the
top level as before.  Hopefully I'll be able to copy the suse menu from the root
user settings somehow.  Anyway this program definately doesn't work right on my
system!

I have installed kdetoys and they did not appear on the menu. They appeared in the menu editor correctly. Clearly the menu editor menu tree is not in sync with the menu on the desktop. kdemenueditor 0.4 in kde 3.1.4 from SuSE 9.0.

Ref #2: This problem has been fixed already (And will be in the next SUSE update for 9.0). As a workaround you can run "kbuildsycoca --noincremental"

  If I modify anything with the panel menu editor it dissappears.  If I try to add any items, or to recreate those that have been killed by this bug, nothing happens.  I have lost all of the links to apps in the internet section.  I tried the "kbuildsycoca --noincremental" as stated above, but recieved a command not found error.  I don't think it is fixed, I use the SuSE online update nightly, and should be up to date.

what we I do to fix this?

 Ok, I ran kbuildsycoca as root, and it was not found.  When I ran it as user, it did run, and said it was building, but I see no difference.  I am still missing the links.

Can you attach your ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu to this bug report?

AFTER you have done that, does it help if you remove this file and rerun kbuildsycoca again?

mike: did you delete ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu while kmenuedit was still running?

Can you 
1) remove it again while kmenuedit is not running
2) run kbuildsycoca --noincremental as user
3) restart kmenuedit

Waldo: Using Suse 9.0 with the "official" KDE 3.2 update (from supplemental), I have the same problem as mike.

The method you described in Comment #8 rebuilds the menu, but the problem remains if I use kmenuedit again after that.

  I apologize for not replying earlier, It has been a crazy winter.  I have tried everything you have suggested with no success.  Any time I use the editor, it looks good as long as I am in the editor, but as soon as I close out, anything I touched in the editor is gone.  Some of the default items are always gone as well (ie, editors are only available under utilities/editors, and not further up on the list under office.  When I run kbuildsycoca --noincremental it takes it back to where it was, (there, but a mess).  The other quirk is that now under the (misc) Applications (top item on the menu) there seems to be everything (42 apps right now) I have ever tried to add or move with the menu editor.  At this point, I would like to clean this mess up, but am afraid to try.  Everytime I do, it just messes up the kmenu even more. 

Please let me know when you think there might be a fix.

I think the problem is caused by this directory:
	/home/dad/.kde/share/applnk/SuSE

If you rename that directory and then delete ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu again, things should work better.

The problem is that due to a bug, the menu gets mightily confused by menus named "SuSE" or "KDE"

This appears to be a very old bug that was never closed.

Can you please test and confirm if this issue is still occurring or if this bug report can be marked as resolved. I've set the bug status to "needsinfo" pending your response, please change back to "reported" or "resolved" when you respond, thanks.
