Description Ross Fawcett 2003-06-07 20:14:13 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc-3.3
OS: Linux

now that there is a kpart for vim for use as an embeded component, it would be nice if kmail could have an option to use this vim kpart or other component for text editing (like kwrite and other kde programs that use the ktext style setup allowing for use of a different kpart to do the text editing). There was a patche for the 3.1 source of kde available here http://freenux.org/kde/patchs/ however its not up to date. Im not sure how hard it would be to implement this, but its a far better solution than to use an external editor (in my case kvim) with kmail when it can be embeded with the kpart.

Hope that wasnt too confusing, if you look at this url http://freenux.org/mirrors/kvim/screenshots.html you will see what i mean embeding the vim kpart in kmail as other kde programs already can.

thankyou for all the hard work to all the kde coders out there, keep up the good work.

Is this planned for the new kmail release ?
Comment 3 Mickael Marchand 2004-08-12 16:31:47 UTC
it is planned since years,
when I made the first patch I was told to forget about it because Zack was doing komposer, but more than a year later we are still waiting ...
seeing the non-activity in libkdepim/komposer, I am getting more and more suspicious about the future of this.

I find quite awful that one of the most popular app of KDE does not use yet ktexteditor ...

Cheers,
Mik

I was so anxious for this feature that I finaly at one point contacted Zack:

http://dot.kde.org/1065244432/10653

Alas... still no sign of ktexteditor support... it's been years in the making; and has lots of votes.

Do any kmail devs know the status? I wonder how close to being complete it is, perhaps if we're lucky someone else will pick up the torch.

If somebody would bother to look at this bug before it will be three years old, then good guys at kate wrote you even HOWTO <http://wiki.kate-editor.org/index.php/Embedding_a_Kate_editor_component>
Comment 6 Corey 2006-04-29 23:48:13 UTC
... this. feature. must. be. important. to. _somebody_!

Is there at least a dev or two who would be willing to mentor and help a junior dev to take a ahand at getting this implemented?

Bravo for KDE 4.2!

Finally, the external editor works again
(with gvim, if one uses the -f option).

But what we would really like would be to
to use vim (or emacs, or whatever other favorite
text editor) embedded in the composed window.

Please, I think of this every time I break a wishbone!

Thanks

You can use an external editor but you cannot embed it into Composer in KMail 2. Keeping the report open and reassigning to KMail2
Comment 12 Carl Schwan 2024-03-12 12:01:52 UTC
The code is now too tied to the new text editor component used all other the place, so we won't implement this feature. Sorry.
