If I have to tabs open one in /home/john and the other maybe /mnt/cdrom or something I'd like to be able to drag a file or folder upto a tab and have that tab come to the front so that I can drop the file in that folder.

Stephan Binner and Zack Rusin have been working on implementing this  
and other tab features, hopefully aiming for 3.2. See:
