I just changed over to using IMAP and I'm getting the same behaviour. A modal dialog with only one option is really pointless--it brings everything grinding to a halt and then extracts no information from the user, who has no choice but to press OK. I would suggest no popup at all (any new windows might disturb the user or cause the window manager to switch desktops) but perhaps something in the KMail status line - red and flashing if you really want - or a discreet audio alert if, as one user noted, a reliable connection is lost reliable and requires user intervention to restore. *** Bug 53610 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 72747 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** This bug has been confirmed by popular vote. *** I am also having this same problem, about every five-ten minutes on average. I suggest a message in the status bar (please NOT red and flashing! :-) maybe with an attention-getting red icon. Even a modeless dialog is annoying, since it creates a flashing entry in the taskbar. This dialog is "don't show this again"-able in KDE 3.5. We want to keep the dialog in general, as it is a valuable hint for those with a LAN connection to their IMAP server, where connection loss is the sign of a problem. Thanks for making this change. I am still a bit mystified as to why my connection is being dropped at all - I have plenty of ssh connections which stay up for days. Is there something different about an IMAP connection? Also, could it be why our mail server gets it knickers in a twist when I use the KMail client? - this is why I avoid using KMail at home unless there is no other machine to use - the Mac OS X mail client on my laptop reports no such problems (though of course it could just be hiding it) and crucially doesn't confuse the mail server. I'm not sure that disabling the dialog permanently is the best solution either. I think that the user should have a way to know that the connection to the server has problems, it is just that the dialogs are too intrusive. What about being able to make kmail use knotify for them? in this way, they could be made passive dialogs instead. But maybe the status line should be changed too, to keep track of the fact that the connection to the server is unavailable. By the way, I have multiple mail accounts, and the dialog has another problem for me: often two - or more - dialogs pop up, and closing them is difficult, because they want to be closed in the "proper" order.
