In contrast to the above, I applied a new image (image1) to a single display using the "Desktop and Wallpaper" settings, and drag-n-drop applied a different image (image2) to another display. After logout/login, image1 was still there, image2 was not. ANOTHER BIT OF ADDITIONAL INFO In comparing how the "Desktop and Wallpaper" settings page (settings) differs from the "drag-n-drop from Dolphin" (DnD) scenario, I noticed that the settings page correctly preselects the actual image on the display (whether it got there through settings or DnD). So I wondered if simply bringing up the settings and clicking OK would fix the issue. It does. I tested by applying two new images to two displays via DnD, and then launching the settings page on one of them and pressing OK. I then rebooted.
