I also have this issue. I don't know if it's the cause, but I also happen to be using the 555 proprietary drivers, although on a 1080 Ti. I also noticed that in a Wayland session, the proprietary driver isn't loaded correctly (I'm not too familiar with Linux graphics pipeline, so "isn't loaded correctly" is my best guess), and it falls back to using llvmpipe instead, but everything works fine on X11.
