Description Jack 2024-05-14 18:15:18 UTC
SUMMARY

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. enable check for updates
2. set updates to check daily
3. set use offline updates

OBSERVED RESULT
the user is notified about software updates, but then do not actually download and install. Instead, the user has to manually install them from the software store.

EXPECTED RESULT
there should be a notification that software updates are available and are downloading and installing. When the user does come to turn the computer off, software updates are done on next boot.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Fedora KDE Plasma 6

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I asked about this behaviour on fedora forums https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/how-to-automatically-update-when-turning-pc-on-and-off/114049/3

Even with updates selected on reboot. this does not happen when the computer is turn off and then later turned back on.

This is likely a duplicate of https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=471548

Is this still a problem with latest 6.2?
Comment 6 Jack 2025-01-26 17:13:11 UTC
Yes, it does appear to be so.

I had another computer on Kubuntu 24.04 LTS that had around 800 or so updates again, even with automatically check for updates and download and install updates. This is on a computer that is used by elderly people, and thus they do not even know how to check for updates or anything, and is only used for browsing and shopping online.

A Solus user with Plasma 6.3.5 complained about the same problem, and I found this report

I'm not able to reproduce the reported problem on Neon Testing (6.5 Dev), or on Solus (6.3.5) using the settings in the attached screenshot. I'm in the process of getting more information from the user, and I'll update this when I have more information.

I did run into a situation with the system tray update notification showing a confusing message on Neon Testing

After setting Update settings and restarting, some of the waiting application updates were no longer shown, they had installed
After a few minutes, Discover closed and I saw a notification that Discover was applying updates
There was also a crash notification for Discover, which I was unfortunately not able to report due to a python error in the crash handler.

The Discover icon in the system tray showed there were updates available, and I clicked it
The Updates page shows "Up to date", even though the update icon shows "Security updates available" - this appears to be because system updates needed a restart to be installed. The system tray icon message is misleading in this case, it should tell the user they need to restart the system.

Could this be related to this? > https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=447245

Auto updates work for me in KDE Linux.

If I power on the PC, I get a notification from Discover telling me there are updates, as expected. If I open discover it shows me a list of pending updates - But nothing happens...

As per bug report 447245, I left my system idle for about 20-ish minutes (to account for the "15 minute idle period"), came back and the updates had been installed. Make sure to disable power settings that may send your PC to sleep etc, if you want to test this.
