Switch to the Breeze Widget Style in the digiKam settings under Miscellaneous->Appearance.
In digiKam-8.3.0 this is set by default.

Readability Main Menu, Status and active Tabs (OSX via Homebrew)

As the energy saving dark designs are very common on laptops, this fix would provide a much better user experience.

You also need to choose a dark color theme in digiKam.

After resetting the appearance from 'Breeze Dark' to 'Breeze' (restart) and then switching back to 'Breeze Dark' the application seems to have overwritten the setting to the correct values. Now everything's looks as expected (3rd screenshot). Thanks to Gilles Caulier for proving the screenshot.

I've done so. I played around with the different themes to choose my favorite. Maybe I created the wrong setting this way.
