Work tables arranged in a grid

If you arrange the desktops in a grid, the top panel for controlling the desktops disappears. This makes the overview effect useless. I have attached two different screenshots where you can clearly see the problem.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: KDE Neon (Unstable), Wayland
KDE Plasma Version: 5.90.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.246.0
Qt Version: 6.6.0

In-line workstables

And these are the desktops arranged in a line, as configured by default. This way everything works.

Can reproduce on master.

This is intentional in the new design. It will show a row of desktops if there is one row, and a column of desktops if there is one column, but if you have multiple rows and columns, the expected UX is for you to use the desktop grid, as this is an advanced use case.

This seems like a strange solution to me, what is the review effect for in such a case? You can't move windows, you can't create or delete desktops. In Plasma 5.27 the worktables in the grid were arranged in a line and I think it should stay that way.

I would chime in to say that I think that it is better to keep old features if the features aren't broken and they are not a maintenance burden -- some users rely on these old features some how, and we probably don't want to break their expectations and disappoint them.

Sorry, it was a design decision. The old view suffered from numerous conceptual issues stemming from collapsing a two-dimensional grid into a one-dimensional list, and we got a lot of bug reports about it. We tried showing the entire grid, but it often took up so much space that there wasn't much room for your windows anymore. In the end the current design was the result of a lot of iteration and I think we're going to stick with it.

Ah I didn't know the context. Thanks for sharing the information!
