Just a further note I don't really think kcminput is responsible for the behavior reported it is the dialog but I don't know the name of the responsible package. Hence I reported it as "wishlist" rather than a kcminput bug. Perhaps it should be assigned to kfile? -- Tom Hardy <*> rhardy@mailandnews.com rhardy@visi.com Reviewing: Control Center|Peripherals|Mouse has an option "single click to open...." and additionally has an "automatically select icons" checkbox. The problem I noticed at the time was that the latter option affected a "file save" dialog opened with a suggested filename such that the filename was changed when one moused over the file list in the dialog, and that this was unlikely to be noticed by the user, as well as hard to recover from. There are presumably other circumstances where "automatically select icons" could cause inadvertent problems. Well, I haven't used "automatically select icons" in a long time, and I don't in fact recall whether the "delay" slider was present at the time. The delay slider seems to be a possible solution. In any case, this seems to be a rather subtle user interface issue. I thought it would be worth a look from a UI expert who might better know of various circumstances in which it would crop up. But it doesn't affect me. I invite review from a UI person, but I'll otherwise mark it resolved in a month or so. The "Automatically select icons" would be a _very_ useful feature, since in a single-click-to-execute -environment this is the most useable way to select an icon. However, as stated in bug 95748's title, it should only do what it says: select _icons_. Currently, in KDE 3.4.3., it affects for instance KDE kcontrol module menus, web page select boxes (NOTE: KDE bug tracking system is hard to use, because you have to avoid hitting any select boxes with your mouse to prevent the feature from selecting anything), and most probably also something else, as stated in the reports. Please seriously consider spending the effort to fix this. KDE Bug Tracking System has this bug reported three times, for three different packages, and assigned to three different persons. The bug numbers are bug 45957, bug 71929, bug 95748. Please clarify the situation. Still valid in KDE 3.5.5. I am copy-pasting this comment to the three separate reports, but I would much rather see a developer identify where exactly the bug is and unifying the information into one relevantly assigned bug report. Moving from "kio/kfile" component to "kfile" product, helps sorting out duplicates. KDE 4 does no longer follow the "Automatically select icons" setting. |
