Does the problem goes away if you remove all the application icons from the panel? Might be due to bug 454105 but it wasn't crashing plasmashell for anyone. This problem only occurred to me twice (the first time, after that I rebooted, and it happened again. I fixed it by removing the panels). I haven't been able to reproduce the issue since.
