SUMMARY
In Kickoff, after right clicking in the left column, the hovering highlight in the right column disappers.
Also, when the above happens, and right click in the right column to open the context menu, that menu can't be dismissed by clicking in empty space as normal.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Kickoff.
2. Right click in the left (category) column.

OBSERVED RESULT
The light blue highlight square in the right column disappears.

EXPECTED RESULT
Nothing happens.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Kickoff.
2. Right click in the left (category) column.
3. Right click in the right column to open the context menu.
4. Click in the empty space.

OBSERVED RESULT
The context menu stays open.

EXPECTED RESULT
The context menu closes.

Also, after right-clicking in the left column, applications in the "History" category become unclickable. Other categories and files in the "History" is clickable.

I can reproduce the initial bug report.  For me, clicking in the right column reactivates the highlight.

The bit in comment #1 about applications under History being unclickable is already reported (bug 449348)

Also I noticed that when right clicking in the right column, as the right-click menu appears, the highlight also disappears.
This is inconsistent with other KDE apps and Plasma widgets (e.g. folder view, window list), where right clicking an item automatically selects and highlight it.

And when the systray is expanded, its icons have the same problem (hovering highlight disappers when right-click menu shows). Guess they both used the same list view component?

I noticed a likely related issue:

When searching for a keyword in kickoff and right-clicking into the list while the cursor is fastly moving, the hightlight disappears and no context menu appears, leaving the kickoff launcher in a seemingly freezed state.

Fixed in Plasma 5.26.
