My screenshot
What Plasma version are you using? I'm on 5.22.5 here and the text in those radio buttons is never elided like that even if I resize the System Settings window to the smallest horizontal size (see my screenshot).
This is my system. My screenresolution is 1920 x 1080. Operating System: KDE neon 5.23 KDE Plasma Version: 5.23.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.90.0 Qt Version: 5.15.3 Kernel Version: 5.11.0-46-generic (64-bit) Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 4 × Intel® Celeron® J4105 CPU @ 1.50GHz Memory: 7.4 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 600 In my view, as the Dutch KDE translator/coordinator, the specification of this page does allows a too small space for this text, as shows the page Raphael Kubo da Costa added. There is ample space after the text to allow more text for the message. So the page definition should change. But imho for the time being "Openen" and "Selecteren" would be more informative... I see two separate issues here: 1. The text is being elided although it shouldn't. 2. The actual translation could be improved. Freek and other native speakers are in a much better position to talk about 2 than I, but I'm interested in 1. I tested the latest Neon user and testing images here with different font sizes and couldn't reproduce that bug from the screenshot. PK: can you share your font settings or any other settings that might be relevant to reproducing this? The translation is good Dutch. The request was to shorten the translation, which is also understandable Dutch, so it fits in the space provided. But the proper solution is to provide enough space for the translation. So I will not change the translation. (In reply to Raphael Kubo da Costa from comment #5) > I see two separate issues here: > 1. The text is being elided although it shouldn't. > 2. PK: can you > share your font settings or any other settings that might be relevant to > reproducing this? As overall font I use Noto Sans 10,5. My screen resolution is 1920 x 1080. I use a little Intel on-board graphics adapter. (In reply to Freek de Kruijf from comment #6) > The translation is good Dutch. So I > will not change the translation. I hope you will take the appropriate action to get more space for these items. But for the time being I think it is very much in the interest of the user to shorten the translation. And imho this way it looks just bad. But for the time being I think it is very much in the interest of the > user to shorten the translation. And imho this way it looks just bad. Other users do not see the issue. I think we do not really know the underlying reason yet why you see this issue, so changing the formulation may not even fix it for you! Therefore it could be wasted effort. (In reply to PK from comment #7) > As overall font I use Noto Sans 10,5. My screen resolution is 1920 x 1080. Aha, the trick was to set the font size to 10,5. For fractional values between 10,5 and 11,5. Even if I switch the locale to English, the text there gets elided (I see "Opens th..." and "Selects th..."). +nate, who worked on this part of plasma-desktop in the past. Nate: when certain non-integer font size values are chosen, the "clicking files or folders" radio buttons in the "Quick Settings" KCM are having their texts elided even though there is plenty of space to show everything there. It's a bug in Qt. See the discussion in Bug 432372. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 432372 *** In the meantime, sticking to integer font sizes will avoid the bug. |
Created attachment 145959 [details] screenshot of the Dutch kcm module "snelle instellingen" SUMMARY *** There are two things you can do by clicking on a file or folder in the KDE system: "Ze open..." or "Ze selecte". Granted that it is strange that this new kcm module "snelle instellingen" offers so little space for these actions, there could be also the possibility to replace "Ze open..." or "Ze selecte", by just "Openen" and "Selecteren". This way it is at the least unpractical. *** STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. 2. 3.
