Hello!

I wanted to provide some additional information to KPPP bug #44834:

I get the same problem as described but in my case "/var/log/syslog.ppp" a=
nd "/var/log/syslog" do not exist. "/var/log/messages" does exist and is aw=
fully long.

The problem does not occur when I use KPPP as root. The access rights of /v=
ar/log/ are drwxr----- and its owner is root group also root.

I hope that helps

best regards

Matthias Hofmann

Hi again

here=B4s a little correction of the email I just sent: the access rights fo=
r /var/log/ are drwxr-xr-x not drwxr----- and I also noticed that I get er=
ror code 19 though I also got 16 sometimes.

Hello again

I finally wanted to let you know that I apparently found an explanation and=
also a solution for the problem: By changing the 'group' property of "/var=
/log/messages" to a group that I belong to I gave KPPP a chance to access =
the file and to generate a different error message from which I learned th=
at I failed to authenticate; I then found out that I had entered the wrong =
password for my ISP and when I entered the correct one it worked! Meanwhil=
e I have changed the 'group' property back to 'root' and it still works.

Just to put it in a nutshell: The whole problem only occurred because KPPP =
was unable to access "/var/log/messages" in order to report the wrong passw=
ord. Therefore there was no change for me to realize that the password was=
 actually the problem.

I don=B4t know if there is a way for you developers to make this more appar=
ent.

Best regards

Matthias Hofmann
