Could it be that you use speed change on the first clip? 
What project settings do you have? 
What type of clips do you use?

No speed changes. Not sure about the settings. I was having no problems
doing similar projects with an earlier version of Kdenlive.

Are you still experiencing this? If yes, please comment on issue 447854 since it is similar to this one but with more debug information.
