I turned off translucency in system settings -> workspace behaviour -> desktop effects. I found another setting in task manager that stops making them translucent but shouldn't that be included in disabling the desktop effect?! I think the fix was disable 'highlight windows when hovering over tasks'... strange way to highlight them... but maybe that resolves it again. >'highlight windows when hovering over tasks'.
