Works for me if I put some music in ~ and then create a symlink to that folder and put them symlink in ~/Music. Can you provide more details regarding the location of the music and your configured music search paths?

Sorry for the late reply, I have my songs stored in the default steam library (/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/music/).

Overall I think settings are pretty messed up since when I activate "force file indexing" close and reopen Elisa the setting stays but when I enter settings it reverts automatically without even hitting apply

If I create ~/things, put a song inside it and make a symlink to ~/things from Music it works but as soon as I click "Refresh Music Collection" it disappears
