By the way, I used another, older laptop (Compaq Notebook) to try and burn a Verbatim CD-R. Same failure. Here's the system (Compaq) information.

If you have spare Verbatim CD-Rs, could you please try: * Using other software to burn the disk (e.g. Nero Burning ROM) * Using a desktop optical disc drive (ODD) or another external (USB) ODD I looked at Nero and can only find a Windows version, no Linux. I did use another burner earlier (Brasero). Similar problem: it ejected the Verbatim disk before burning. I have no other hardware than the two laptops I mentioned.
