We had that before, people complained the number was always so huge, so it got removed again. I'm not going back and forth on this every other release, sorry. After doing some search, you are probably talking about https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=347770? So adding that for reference. Also just as an info, I rather imagined a small badge with the count for the bell, not replacing the bell altogether with the count as it was done on the old approach. Assuming the bug I linked above is the bug you were talking about, the number being too huge seemed not to be the problem there. Also My proposal would result in a smaller number. It seems you are a bit upset by this request given the style of the answer (this is not meant as insult or anything like that, just the impression I got). Let's maybe try to keep things more on the factual side here, for example technically it wouldn't be "every other release" nor necessarily just "back and forth". I really like the work on the notification system so far and this is not a critical point but hopefully this can be discussed more openly :) Also adding the relevant differential revision on Phabricator where the old way of just showing the number icon has been changed to a bell icon for reference: https://phabricator.kde.org/D23018 Also somewhat related: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=384015 To me it seems ok to have this open as a feature request and I think my comment also outlined arguments. Unfortunately there has been no reaction to those arguments making this somewhat hanging in the air. Thus I suggest we wait another week. When there is no reaction until then I will reopen. I reopen since there hasn't been activity for over one week after my announcement in comment #5. Kai is the maintainer and he gave decent reasons for why it is the way it is (we had lots of complaints about the old style). Thus the only options are to leave it the way it is, or add an option. He doesn't seem interested in adding an option, and there's no point in having bug reports open that have no change of being actioned, so we have to close this. Sorry. :) (In reply to Nate Graham from comment #7) > Kai is the maintainer and he gave decent reasons for why it is the way it is > (we had lots of complaints about the old style). I think you misread my suggestions. I was not suggesting changing it back to the old style but instead showing a small indicator below like it is done for battery percentage for example. The two reasons Kai gave are thus not applicable here: - Complaints about the number being so huge: Can be solved with making the number smaller and only an addition to the original icon (see above). Also the statement is not backed up with a reference. The bug report I found (linked above) did not contain complaints about that. (But that is not that important to me). - Going back and forth: I did not suggest to change it back to the old style. > Thus the only options are > to leave it the way it is, or add an option. He doesn't seem interested in > adding an option, and there's no point in having bug reports open that have > no change of being actioned, so we have to close this. Sorry. :) Third option, as proposed: Change to a better style that fits all needs. If there are other arguments, I am totally open to discuss them. However, as outlined above, the currently given arguments seem to include some misunderstanding and don't seem to apply here. Thus using them as reasons to resolve this does not seem correct to me. Would you like to work on a patch to add the battery overlay style icon? Probably not in the near future. |
Created attachment 130029 [details] Notification bell in the tray without count indicator SUMMARY I am used from other systems that a notification count is displayed for apps and also system notifications. So I thought it might be useful to also add that to Plasma. There might be objections though, for example one might argue that introducing this will lead to more disturbance. I am open to that discussion.
