Changing the name to make it more clear what you mean by lag. Using the 26 May 5.0.0 prealpha appimage, I don't see any difference in lag between Mask, Colour and Lightness modes. The only time I see lag is if Canvas Graphics Acceleration is disabled and I use a large brush size. Then the lag is similar for all modes but better in Mask mode. Do you have Canvas Graphics Acceleration enabled and have Instant Preview enabled? Can you do Help -> Show system information for bug reports and paste the contents here?
