Every time I start kmail, it defaults back to the separate columns settings for unread/total/size. Kmail should remember that setting.

It works here.
Which qt version do you use ?

Frameworks 5.47.0, Qt 5.10.1 on Kubuntu 18.04.

qt5.10 was broken.
