I can see the characters, and I suspect it's a font replacement issue, as the not all the fonts referenced by the document are embedded. What is the content of the File->Properties->Fonts tab? Created attachment 113208 [details]

Please try to remove the tex-gyre fonts (or configure fontconfig to not use them as primary choice for Helvetica & co). Wow that seems to have done it! Care to inform me why they were breaking things? I don't know much about fonts in general, or how linux specifically handles them. Those fonts apparently come from the texlive-fontsrecommended package, should I lodge a bug with my distro about it? Could it still be considered an okular bug, that it chose that font rather than a different one? Or is that up to a different subsystem? Shouldn't fonts list which symbols they have inside? It's not an Okular bug.
