Sentry Crash Report:

Description kdesux 2018-05-04 13:36:05 UTC
This problem started a month or two ago, exact version unknown. If I start my laptop with no external monitors then it is ok. If I start the laptop with a couple monitors plugged in, then when I login through sddm, KDE comes up and the desktop on the primary display is dead / crashed as in windows appears over it but the background is black (no wallpaper) and clicking on the desktop area produces no response. The work-around is to logout and login again, after which the desktop is live on all monitors. This means that after every reboot I have to login twice to get a functional desktop.

If there's a crash I need a crash report.

from the "dead" session can you open a konsole through krunner (alt+f2) and start plasmashell there?

Hopefully that will bring up the drkonqi icon in the tray for the previously crashed plasma.

Please reopen if you can't manage to get the trace saying what steps failed.

To be more clear, there is no popup saying that anything crashed, and plasmashell is live on the non-primary display(s) (wallpaper rendered, desktop reacts to right click, etc). It is just the monitor which should be the primary display (and thus the one with the tray and K menu) that is dead (blank black background, no reaction to clicks on the desktop, etc). Perhaps I should have just said dead rather than crashed to avoid confusion since there is no hint of a crashed process. Plasmashell is running but only partially working at this point and Dr Konqui could present itself if it wanted to. I had the impression some part of plasmashell is crashed, e.g. the thread for the primary desktop died while the rest carries on. Is there some log for plsmashell that would be more helpful?

This seems to be a duplicate of bug 391531, can you please confirm if it is?
