I use: raspberry 3pi, UbuntuMate 16.04, kstars/ekos 2.8.9, DSLR camera nikon5600 bulb via usb(&extern USB hub for power), Celestron 4se Telescope, Celestron StarSense Autoalign, Celestron SkyPortal Wifi Modul(at moment via cabel/usb because kstars doesn't connect to Skyportal) My initial guess is that perhaps the SkyPortal WiFi module does not recognize the "handshake" command used for cabled setups and so it times out. Try one thing, use telnet to connect to it from Ubuntu telnet 192.175.11.36@2000 Once you're in, just type V and then press enter. If you responds, then it works fine. After that, try to type Kx and then press enter and see what response you get. Need more information as pointed out in the last comment.
