The offest ist 0 at position 0 in a line. with every x+1 the offset is +1, so my cursors trails a black "snake" that getting longer the more away the cursor is from position 0. What font are you using? I've seen this with non mono fonts. If you can provide the information requested in comment #1, please add it.
