The idea is simple: have a section dedicated to protocol associations rather than filetypes, so if some application wants to use http, you can set an application to process the request

true indeed.

similar suggestions were made a few times.

it should be easier to remove e.g. Gnome-Builder's associations - of which there are far too many - in one fell swoop via GUI.

Or at least reprimand it to 

X-KDE-InitialPreference=3

The Builder.desktop file needs to be edited for this, which now must be done manually.

Isn't this located in System Settings > Default Applications ?
