I've got the latest version for my distribution, i.e., 4:4.13.3-0ubuntu0.1. Could you please attach a screenshot that shows file names with underscores among the Recent Files in Kate? There are two possibilities:
1. The bug disappeared in a later version
2. There is some glitch in your system that would still show the bug even with the latest version
Either way, it is essential for you to test with the latest version,
