Description Wiktor 2015-07-19 08:59:10 UTC
From time to time battery monitor on my laptop tells me that there is no battery but I'm not even touching that battery. Lower level Linux tools (upower, acpi) has no problem with providing valid informations about battery.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use system for awhile.
2. Use it a little longer…
3. And there it is: battery monitor changes status to show me that there is no battery connected!

[wicu@arch a]$ upower --dump

It tells that there is no battery
Comment 2 Wiktor 2015-07-19 09:04:35 UTC
1. Logging off, then logging in restores proper status.
2. Suspending, then waking up system doesn't.
Comment 3 Markus 2016-05-07 04:08:08 UTC
I can confirm this problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga12 with Slackware64-Linux 14.2/-current and KDE Framework 5.21/Plasma 5.6.3 and Application 16.04.0. UPower is at version 0.9.23. Kernel is 4.6rc6.

Here is my output from upower --dump:

This is the output when the battery is not detected directly after i booted into Plasma5:

Is there any other output/logfile interesting that i can check to provide more information?
Comment 4 Markus 2016-05-20 15:13:31 UTC
I just upgraded to Kernel 4.6final... and still have that issue. Still unsure if this is a kernel or KDE issue. Any help to solve this issue is welcome. I really don't want to logoff/login just to fix the battery indicator.

No comment from the devs at all?

I also have this issue on my HP ProBook 5320m running Kubuntu 16.04. I didn't notice it when running 15.10.

In addition to the low level tools successfully reading the battery status, the KDE login screen also shows the battery status correctly. But when I log in, sometimes (not always) the system tray says no battery found. But then if I log out, the login screen still shows the correct battery info again.

The system tray monitor is obviously doing something different to the login screen - the latter works reliably but the former does not.
Comment 6 gustavo 2016-08-01 01:44:14 UTC
I confirm the problem on Ubuntu 16.04 with KDE, fully up to date. It happens exactly as Tim Taylor described on the comment above.

Kernel is:

Linux ghlaptop 4.4.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13 00:07:12 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Comment 7 Jannis Mast 2016-11-03 08:21:12 UTC
Same problem here on Gentoo, running Linux 4.7.10, KDE frameworks 5.26.0 and Plasma 5.7.5. I have first seen this after upgrading from Plasma 5.6 and frameworks 5.23.
Also, it seems that only the systray is affected by this. The lockscreen shows the battery level and the screen brightness is set correctly when unplugging from AC power.

I've just noticed that restarting plasmashell seems to fix this sometimes (no need to log out and restart the entire session)

Plasmashell produces the following output in .xsession-errors, could be related to this problem?
file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.battery/contents/ui/CompactRepresentation.qml:54:39: Unable to assign [undefined] to int
file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.battery/contents/ui/CompactRepresentation.qml:54:39: Unable to assign [undefined] to int

Any news?
Comment 10 gustavo 2017-01-09 15:46:49 UTC
The problem happens after suspend + resume. Situation goes back to normal with:

killplasmashell
kstart plasmashell

The lock screen has a battery monitory that shows no problems.

Any news on getting this fixed?
Comment 11 Rolf Eike Beer 2017-04-07 17:21:49 UTC
I have the same, KF5 5.30, plasma 5.8.95.
Comment 12 Tim Taylor 2017-04-07 17:35:00 UTC
I still have this problem with Kubuntu 16.10.

As an interim measure I've written a little script that will report the key battery stats:

---
#!/bin/bash
upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0 | gawk '/percentage|state|time/ {print}'
---
Comment 13 gustavo 2017-04-07 21:14:03 UTC
I still have this problem with KDE 5.8.5 LTS and I confirmed it really is a problem with powerdevil because an alternative widget works fine.

I'm attaching the widget that I have confirmed that works. It only needs to be untarred at:

/usr/share/plasma/plasmoids

and then it can be added to the system tray.

In short: the original battery monitor from KDE seems to fail randomly. The attached one works everytime.

Comment 15 gustavo 2017-04-07 21:19:04 UTC
Note: the attached tarball contents belong to the plasmoid that got installed directly from the KDE UI as a user. I then located it in the home folder, put it into a tarball, deinstalled using the KDE UI and tried to put it system wide at /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids (which worked).

I don't know exactly where KDE downloads it from.

Tested with Ubunty 16.04 and KDE LTS backport from the Kubuntu repositiories.

The same also here...
All components except those from KDE recognize the battery correctly. :(
Why is no developer interested in this problem again?

Comment 19 Ricardo J. Barberis 2018-03-14 01:06:07 UTC
I have the same problem, sometimes when I reboot my laptop the battery monitor shows no battery present and if I relogin it shows it correctly.

I noticed that if I reboot my laptop with my wireless mouse's dongle unplugged the battery monitor usually works fine.

With the mouse's wireless dongle plugged in, it usually fails to detect any battery.

Maybe it's something related to trying to detect the mouse's battery?

I remember reading on Planet KDE that the battery monitor should show you mouse/keyboard battery status but it never worked for me.

Same problem here with
- Kubuntu 18.04
- KDE Frameworks 5.44
- KDE Plasma 5.12.6
- Kernel 4.15.0-34-generic
- UPower is at version 0.99.7.

Reproducible: Almost always

Steps to reproduce:
1. After logon, unplug and plug the battery.
2. Close session and login again.
3. Battery is showed by plasmoid and detected by UPower.

*Sometimes battery is detected before the session is closed.

Who owns upower? Should we close this as RESOLVED UPSTREAM with a request to file a bug to upower?
Comment 28 Rolf Eike Beer 2018-09-25 15:09:19 UTC
So why does it work on the lockscreen, does that read it's information from somewhere else?
Comment 29 Kai Uwe Broulik 2018-09-25 15:13:12 UTC
I suspect it's an update bug somewhere, screen locker starts and then reads the information fresh on start. We have found an issue in the proxy model we use for sorting batteries but that seems unlikely to just hide them all, especially not in the tooltip.

Just restarted my laptop.

acpi -i outputs nothing.

upower -d does not detect the battery.

dmesg outputs an acpi error

And I can confirm that
a) the battery indicator works correctly in the login screen when you the session is locked
b) restarting plasma with kquitapp5 plasmashell ; kstart5 plasmashell is a workaround that solves the issue till the following reboot.

Can't reproduce the behaviour described on b). Also, do you use some custom login screen?

Operating System: KDE neon 5.16
KDE Plasma Version: 5.16.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.61.0
Qt Version: 5.12.3
Kernel Version: 4.15.0-58-generic
Comment 38 Xwang 2019-08-20 20:31:08 UTC
After the plasma restart and a reboot the issue has resolved on my pc.
I use sddm as login.
Comment 39 Stefan Schmid 2019-08-21 10:05:55 UTC
Since I switched to "dbus-broker" the error did not occur any more.
Comment 40 Alexander Fieroch 2019-12-16 14:48:28 UTC
Unfortunately this years old bug still exists on Kubuntu 19.10.

powerdevil 4:5.17.4-0ubuntu1~ubuntu19.10~ppa1 amd64

KDE Plasma Version: 5.17.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.64.0

 kquitapp5 plasmashell; kstart5 plasmashell
This workaround works, but is no solution!

I'm not able to reproduce, can you check few things?
1. I battery listed correctly if you click on the tray icon?
2. Can you run: plasmoidviewer -a org.kde.plasma.battery
a) is battery listed?
b) is it still listed after few hours (or whatever is needed for bug to occur)
c) if battery not visible, can you send logs (console output) from plasmoidviewer?

> I'm not able to reproduce, can you check few things?

Interesting, it changed since my comment. I've noticed that KDE Frameworks has upgraded to 5.65.0 what the reason could be for the change.
Now the battery is detected but sometimes it says the power is critical at 0% and the PC will shutdown in 60seconds. After less seconds it gets power information and everything seems to be ok but it switches back to 0% and back again to the real load. This is not reproducable - it just happens from time to time.
I've attached a screenshot to show this.

Unfortunately I cannot test this anymore. But I'll try if power is critical with 0% for more than some seconds...

same as in taskbar - battery with 0% load

seems to be random for me

Maybe this helps? is backlighthelper buggy?

My battery is "gone" from the panel, so I started plasmoidviewer. It just shows a blank square, but when I click on it it shows the battery with 51%, which sounds plausible. When I click on the "empty" (= "no battery") icon in my taskbar it does not show this.

This but is fixed for me! It was not a bug in software - it was a bug in notebook firmware.
To all others who still see this problem with no battery detected: do you have a lenovo notebook? maybe you have a bug in firmware too and we can close this software bug in plasma battery monitor.

Comment 56 Weng Xuetian 2021-03-09 19:34:39 UTC
Just FYI some information.
Basically kde's battery widget queries upower via dbus. Randomly I noticed that upower would simply freeze due to some underlying calls to libusbmuxd (something that likely to be used when you plug in ios device, e.g. iphone and ipad).

So you might want to check if this is related to a freezing upower. (Make some dbus call to upower) For me I could confirm that all my "missing battery" issue is not related to KDE but upower freezing.
Comment 57 David Edmundson 2021-03-10 00:17:22 UTC
It does come from upower (via solid) but unless upower blocked for > 25s (our timeout policy) it shouldn't make a difference.
Comment 58 David Edmundson 2021-03-10 00:25:57 UTC
@noshsed can you confirm the batery is listed in "solid-hardware5 --list"
Comment 59 Nowshed H. Imran 2021-03-10 15:36:02 UTC
@David Here is when the battery is listed(Providing only the Upower bit). I will do this once more when the icon is missing.
