That happens if opengl is disabled, or if we cannot use shaders in opengl. Could you check your display settings? Yeah, by default I have OpenGL switched on, very laggy without, even though I have high spec system, Nvida Geforce 560ti, etc. Without OpenGL on, it's the same. Additionally when you move the cursor off the canvas and to the grey area, the brush colour changes to Green. The change in color when leaving the image is normal. What are your exact opengl settings? Is it like: OpenGL enabled High Quality Filtering Use Texture Buffer ? Yep, those exactly: OpenGL enabled, High Quality Filtering, Use Texture Buffer. It might be some driver/Qt rendering bug :( Probably, you could try updating NVidia drivers?
