In a directory with pictures, have the overview screen open and change sorting from 'by name' to 'by date'.
That works fine, BUT if you have an .avi (e.g. video taken with camera) in that directory as well, Gwenview hangs

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. have directory with .jpg and .avi
2. change sorting
3.

Actual Results:  
gwenview hangs

I have the same problem. When gwenview is configured to sort files by date and there is an .avi file in the folder, it hangs.

Gwenview also hangs if there are many files in a folder, because it uses additional tags stored in the file to get the date.
There should be an option to sort by "normal" file date (the one used by dolphin).

My collection of photos and videos is too large for Gwenview to handle and Digikam won't let me set "Arrow right" hotkey as "Next image" - So there is no real usable program for me :(
