Description Geoff 2015-01-06 01:03:30 UTC
Annoying 'progress bar' appears on the desktop following a period of approx 60 of inactivity. It is not persistent enough to allow a screenshot (appears for approx 5 secs) ... it is a rectangular 'progress type' bar with an image of a pc screen at the LH side and a percent indicator at the right hand side that. The 'bar area' in between is always static and colourless.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. New install of Mint 17.1 KDE Rebecca
2. It appears prior to any config adjustments by the user
3. No system config efforts seem to affect it.

Umm, could that be the screen brightness indicator that errorneously appears on 4.x series [1] when, after having been idle, the screen dims?

That being the case ... perhaps this helps ... whenever Mint has been installed on this laptop (see lshw output above) the brightness functionality on the keyboard has never worked .... to make it work i have had to change the file /etc/default/grub, to include the line:

 “GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi="”

then "sudo update-grub" to apply changes, after which i can manually alter the brightness of the screen via the keyboard. In fact now that i think about it this bug has been around since the days i used to have Ubuntu installed ... how about 3 yrs ago!

Yes ... that is the culprit!!!!
Comment 6 Kai Uwe Broulik 2015-01-07 21:02:32 UTC
That has been fixed in Plasma 5. Said popup now only ever appears when you manually change the brightness, never when the system does it automatically.
