Are you touching the correct slider? There's three of them (AC plugged in, battery mode, low battery), also make sure the checkbox next to it is checked. Does changing brightness using the battery applet in system tray work? I have similar problem with my laptop. I am currently using Kubuntu 15.04 (Plasma 5.3). The brightness slider doesn't change the brightness. The key board shortcuts (ex: Fn + F5/F6) shows the brightness icon with slider moving but doesn't change the brightness on screen. I am using the following temporary fix: I write values (0-4822) in the file "/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness" to change the brightness.
