If the X server does not restart or crashes, there is nothing KDE developers can do. Please report this issue to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ Have done now, but this has ONLY been a problem since KDE5 so I detect a relationship. Not sure why the status has changed to resolved, it isn't. > KDE 4.14.2 (why isn't this in the Version list?)..

So which version of the desktop are you using? Does disabling KWin compositing help?
Please also check /var/log/Xorg.0.log* why the X server does not switch to graphics mode. If you are sure a KDE component crashes, please add the backtrace for the crash.
