These boot params fixed it for me: video.use_native_backlight=1 video.brightness_switch_enabled=0 I am going to leave it open so people can discuss other methods. Version 4.8 of the KDE software you are using is no longer maintained by KDE developers. If you can reproduce this issue with version 4.11.5 or newer, please add a comment. How can I upgrade it? Please ask in a forum or mailing list of your distribution how to install newer KDE packages. Kali Linux distribution does not really support KDE packages. The table at distrowatch does not list a kdelibs version at all for the current release. Also, the needed Qt software is not up-to-date either, see http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=kali If you are interested in running a KDE desktop, I suggest to use a distribution which officially supports KDE packages, the distrowatch page offers lots of information to compare them.
