Example of feature in Thunderbird
I hope this image helps explain. Basically you can select any message and pull up a view that shows all of the messages in the thread.
In this image you can see that I first select a message and click on the "Open Message in Conversation" context menu item. By doing that Thunderbird brings up a display with all of the messages that are in the same thread as the selected message.
As I mentioned earlier this is useful as you often want to refer to older messages in a thread, but don't always have them in the same folder such that threaded view applies.
