I use Opensuse 13.1 with KDE 4.12.  There is no possibility to control the volume of system notifications independently of other sound sources in the system. At least not if one refrains from using pulseaudio (PA). And the sound of the system notifications is disturbingly high !

No option is offered in the dialogs of System Notification Configuration. Under "Player settings" I only have an option of "No audio output". Neither is there a special slider in kmix - neither on the main panel with the standard volume controls for the hardware nor on the panel for sound streaming sources as amarok.   

So on cannot control the relative volume of system notifications with respect to other sound sources. 

I know that PA and pavucontrol would give me a slider and I have tested that. However, I do not want to use PA for a number of reasons (bugs, problems with many sound cards, coupling of volume controls , ... ).  

And I think KDE (or Opensuse ???) should not force people to use PA to get control over the volume of system notification sounds. This should be possible independently of PA !
