- What I was doing when the application crashed:

first attempt to start an activity resulted in a screen with widgets from the activity i started with and a blank screen otherwise (no wallpaper from the "started" activity). the activity i wanted to start stayed inactive. so i switched back to the old activity. after another attempt to start the activity, it started and plasma crashed.

the only thing i can reproduce is the inability to start any but the initial activity.

I can't reproduce this at all with Kubuntu 12.10 beta, could you maybe try again with a new user?

I am also experiencing this bug, although I don't know whether it is related. I attached the crashfile.

How to reproduce:
I create an activity with just the activity switcher on it, switching works without problems. After the next logout/reboot starting this activity crashes plasma-desktop.

plasma-desktop (4.12.2) on KDE Platform 4.12.2 using Qt 4.8.5

- What I was doing when the application crashed:
Logged in to KDE desktop, and and previously saved session was restored. Clicking Kontact application icon fron system tray did not bring up the window. After few tries to open Kontact from the tray the Plasma shell crashed.

- Unusual behavior I noticed:
1. Kontact application window flashed on the screen and disappeared instantly without any user action. During that short period I noticed Akregator was showing popup : "restore session".
2. KDE session was not restored properly. Before the previous logout I had two desktop widgets (folder view and analog clock) in an activity called "Default". After logging in the activity is "New activity", there are no widgets and "Default" activity is not available in activity switcher.

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug has already been resolved in Plasma 5.
