Description stig 2001-07-25 08:45:02 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: konsole
Version: 1.0.1 (using KDE 2.1.1 )
Severity: normal
Installed from: Linux-Mandrake 8.0 i586
Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Linux-Mandrake 8.0 2.96-0.48mdk)
OS: Linux 2.4.2-11mdksmp i686
OS/Compiler notes:

konsole should not reply upon klipper for url selection. gnome-terminal does a better job of dealing with urls but it's not perfect either...it should leave "open in browser" in the popup menu all the time placed at the top and deactivate it when there's no url under the right-click. by implication that's what i'm suggesting that konsole ought to do. don't forget https:// and ftp://

Is this wish even valid anymore? klipper and konsole seem to work O.K. in KDE3.2.1.
Comment 5 stig 2004-04-11 05:16:37 UTC
yeah, it's probably still valid. Basic terminal clickable things should not depend upon kde's clipper. the interface is better if you can just click urls than if you need to do some manual selection/klipper manipulation nonsense.

Yes, it would be very useful, for example when using irssi. It should be configurable which browser to use, btw.

Wow, this request was opened in 2001 and not implemented yet, but it would be a really nice feature :)

Personally I think it should be possible to create a regex for the linking (just like klipper) and let it run a command you like, that way you could also add your own protocols.

Also, perhaps it could be extended a little more so you could select some text and add a 'search for ... with google' or similar to the rightclick menu.
Comment 15 Robert Knight 2007-01-09 06:31:05 UTC
I have made some progress on this for KDE 4. I intend to implement basic URL opening and highlighting of text phrases specified by the user. Depending on how much time I have I might be able add some customization to this facility.
Comment 16 Leon Weber 2007-01-10 15:28:29 UTC
This is really great. I hope I will be able to open a link with a single left click by default, so I don't need to go through the context menu, which would be quite the same as the current way of selecting, right clicking, copying.

This is how it presently works, but like anything else it may change pending feedback from testers.

No, the built-in URL recognition has a very important advantage - the URL gets underlined when you mouse over it. This makes the feature much more discoverable. I didn't know anything about Klipper's URL opening feature until I came across this bug report.
