I have the same problem with Fedora-16 (kdepim-4.8.2-1.fc16.i686). This makes the group facility completely useless. I note that when a contact is added to a group, the entry in ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/distlists is modified by the addition of a cipher; but this cipher is not the same as the contact UID. Tested in Mageia 2 beta 3 - KDE 4.8.2. Good news - contacts added to group some months ago are still visible. Bad news - attempting to Edit, to add another name, crashed Kontact - tried a second time, to confirm the problem and it behaved identically. Sadly, then, this may still be broken.
