Description Nikos Platis 2012-01-28 16:28:04 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.8.0)
OS: Linux

Just installed KDE 4.8 and noticed that now kate automatically wraps lines longer than 1024 characters (cf. Bug 236833).

For some people this is totally unacceptable since their files may have long lines for a reason -- and since kate is used by most (if not all) native KDE editors they may have no way out...

BTW, if kate has performance issues with suce files, as mentioned in Bug 236833, the solution is not to wrap the files, but to fix kate...

Anyway, it seems that this is actually configurable: The editor options contain a new setting "Line length limit" under Open/Save -> General, which, if set to 0 (seems to) disable this behaviour.

Unfortunately this is not documented at all:
a) The informative message that appears when you open a file with long lines does not mention that you are able to configure this setting
b) The options dialog does not have a help message associated with this new setting.
c) As I can see, this is not even documented in the help file: http://docs.kde.org/development/en/kde-baseapps/kate/config-dialog-editor.html#pref-open-save

All of the above points should be fixed until kate can properly handle files with long lines...

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open a file with long lines (>1024 chars).

Read the message informing that long lines have been wrapped.

Expected Results:
The message should inform that this behaviour is configurable.

+1, I also had some trouble finding the configuration for this feature.
Also I think that 1024 chars is a bit low as a default value, but if the configuration settings was correctly pointed out it would be a non-issue.

I can add this to the documentation for 4.8.2, but the dialog box won't get updated until 4.9 due to string freeze.

Thanks for reporting this!

The documentation has been updated, and will be included with Kate & KWrite in KDE 4.8.2. It will also appear on the development branch of http://docs.kde.org/ in about a week or so.

I also updated the warning to make it more clear that this is configurable, but unfortunately that won't appear in Kate until 4.9 because 4.8 is under a string freeze.
